Five African projects redefining architecture in 2026

Contemporary African architecture is no longer a promise. It is a body of work, with its figures, its debates and its successes. Here are five projects that, this year, feel like a turning point.

1. A campus that breathes, Kigali

A university built entirely in local fired brick, with full natural ventilation across 12,000 m². The site employed 340 people from neighbouring villages.

2. The museum of memory, Dakar

A spiral plan with no main façade. The building reveals itself through walking. Top light is the galleries' only source of illumination.

3. Floating market, Cotonou

On stilts, with a fully demountable timber-and-bamboo structure. The most intelligent answer we have seen to rising lagoon waters.

4. Cooperative housing, Accra

120 self-developed homes, with an open-plan system residents complete themselves over the years. Architecture as a framework rather than a finished product.

5. Health centre, Tahoua region

180 m², a tiny budget, a ventilated double roof holding 28 °C when it is 44 °C outside. Proof that performance is a question of intelligence, not means.

What links these projects? None of them thinks of itself as an exception. All of them aim to be repeatable.
